Ottawa is a fantastic city that offers a mix of the English speaking majority and yet still some of the French speaking Quebec style and offers you a glimpse at beautiful parks, stunning examples of architecture and a plethora of outdoor markets and cafe stalls. It’s cold in winter and can often reach temperatures on minus twenty, but this is a beautiful city to immerse yourself in, often overlooked by Toronto and Montreal as it nestles between the two.

The tulip festival started in 1953 after princes Juliana of the Netherlands gave Ottawa one hundred thousand tulip bulbs to show their appreciation, as the city harboured the royal family in the Second World War, after they had been exiled. The festival has now become the largest tulip festival in the world and not only features the flowers but floats and musical concerts to entertain the visitors.

The city is the provincial capital of the region of Ontario, and has the parliamentary building to secure its place in history. There is an IMAX theatre if you are looking for something a little more modern, and you can pass the time people watching in some of the little cafes and patisseries along the streets. You will fall in love with the architecture and scenery of this city, and also some of the amazing food that it has to offer.
